Marcos Legacy
Why is this man, long dead, but his family politically connected and now his son about to be proclaimed the 17th President, still divides the country and brings back memories of old wounds. According to wikipedia sources;
Heavy industrialization projects
In 1979, Marcos put a range of 11 heavy industrialization projects[460] on the Philippines’ economic agenda.
The eleven priority projects were:[460] the construction of an aluminum smelter, a copper smelter,[461] an integrated petrochemical complex,[462] an integrated pulp and paper plant, an integrated steel mill, and a phosphatic fertilizer plant; the development of an alcogas industry; the expansion of the country’s cement industry; the integration of the country’s coconut industry; the promotion of diesel engine manufacturing; and the construction of a nuclear power plant.
Other industrialization projects during the Marcos administration included 17 hydroelectric[463][464] and geothermal power plants[465][466] to lessen the country’s dependency on oil.[467] With the commissioning of the Tongonan 1 and Palinpinon 1 geothermal plants in 1983, the Philippines became the second largest producer of geothermal power in the world.[465][468]
The Philippine economy began to go in decline in 1981 because of excessive debt,[219] however, and finally went into a tailspin in 1984.[219][469] This resulted in the closure of factories, massive layoffs, and the end of work on Marcos’ industrialization projects until he was finally deposed two years later.[469]
Fast forward 40 years after his ouster, did he or did he not put the Philippines on the map?
Edifice Complex or Visionary Leadership
Media says the wife has the edifice complex. Meaning the couple preferred erecting structurw structures like the Manila Film Center, cultural center of the Philippine, the Coconut Palace, and more as opposed to uplofting the life of Juan de la Cruz. They are described as something the Filipinos do not need at the time the economy is reeling from the oil crisis in the last 70’s. Id say he is the wife of the President who is visionary, of putting across the country as a powerhouse, able to design and construct such a structure, proudly Philippine Architect design. Consider this, at those times, there were no skyscrapers nor Architectural buildings around Asia. No Malaysia Twin Towers, no Taipei 101, no HK shanghai skyscraper, no Korea Towers. Was she self serving or just plain selfless? Whatever her motives were, history is the judge.
